What Is Well Water Testing?

Throughout history, private wells have been an excellent source for drinking water. To this day, well water is extremely popular in areas throughout the United States. Northern Virginia is one such area that has the topography to support well water. If tested on a regular basis, well water can provide quality that surpasses that of any water source even that of public drinking water systems.

For those who are thinking about drilling a well or who have recently moved into a home with a well, you probably have been informed about the water testing required under State and Federal Laws. Some local municipalities require a complete chemical analysis prior to the well even being approved for human consumption.

The two most important well tests are for bacteria and nitrate. Coliform bacteria are microorganisms that are found in the intestines of most mammals and usually show up in soil, vegetation, and water run off. The presence of coliform bacteria in a water supply is a clear indication that there is a potential for disease-producing organisms to be present as well. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites can cause illness if consumed. Drinking water drawn from a private well should be tested for the presence of coliform bacteria at least once a year. If there is any change in taste, odor, or appearance of your well water stop use immediately and call a water-testing specialist.

Nitrates in well water also pose a threat if consumed at high levels. Although nitrates are found naturally in many types of foods, high levels pose serious threats to infants less than six months of age. When nitrates hit the stomach of an infant they are transformed into nitrite. Nitrite enters the blood stream and inhibits its ability to carry oxygen to certain parts of the body. Consumption of high levels of nitrates can cause suffocation or blue baby syndrome. Nitrates enter the well water from infiltration of fertilizers, municipal wastewater, and plant decay.
